Outward Bound, a quintet session from 1960, shows Dolphy in a somewhat transitional phase, his music closer to the hard bop of the late '50s than the free jazz of the '60s. 245 is a late-night blues on which Dolphy, on alto, testifies his feeling and loyalty to the form. The standard Glad to Be Unhappy is given a lovely, lively reading on flute, with the band providing appropriately spare, sympathetic accompaniment. Outward Bound is a jazz album by Eric Dolphy, released in 1960. His first album as leader, it is somewhat less adventurous and more oriented towards straight bebop than the majority of his later recordings. Of the three Dolphy originals on the album, G. is dedicated to the Californian bandleader Gerald Wilson, Les is named after the trombonist Lester Robinson, and 245 was the number of Dolphy's house. A seventh piece from the same session, April Fool, is only added on the 2006 RVG Remasters series Prestige PRCD-30083-2. The first issues of the album on the label New Jazz have a cover painting by a friend of Dolphy's, Richard Jennings, who signed his work The Prophet Prophet 22. This is why Outward Bound, Dolphy's first recording as a leader, is a not-so-distant relative of Coltrane's My Favorite Things Atlantic, 1960. On balance, both discs have a conventional base. While Coltrane stuck to the Great American Songbook, Dolphy penned over half the tunes on Outward Bound even so, those originals mesh perfectly with classics like On Green Dolphin Street and Charles Greenlea's Miss Toni. It's the respective opening tracks that separate both discs from the norm. As Coltrane used an innocuous song from The Sound of Music to launch us into. Outward Bound 1960.
